About Sezincote
India in the Cotswolds, on your doorstep
Sezincote is a Grade I listed Mughal-style country house built around 1805, set in a romantic water garden designed with input from Humphry Repton and Thomas Daniell. The Prince Regent visited in 1807 and was inspired to remodel the Royal Pavilion at Brighton in its image.
The garden is the highlight for many visitors: a serpentine stream, an Indian bridge with Brahmin bulls, a temple to the sun god Surya, and a south garden framed by life-size stone elephants and slender Italian cypress. From Mae Cottage it is around 7 minutes by car, so it works beautifully as a half-day visit.

The house
An onion dome above honey-coloured Cotswold stone
Sezincote was built for Sir Charles Cockerell on his return from the East India Company, in a style that fuses Cotswold stone with Mughal Indian detail. The result is unlike anything else in the region, and it is genuinely surprising to come across it down a country lane outside Moreton.
A long curved orangery sweeps from the house to a small octagonal pavilion. Inside, the rooms are family rooms still in use, with paintings, Indian artefacts and a relaxed country-house feel.
The garden

The garden is divided in two. To the north, the Thornery is a romantic water garden with a serpentine stream, the Indian bridge and the temple to Surya, all set in mature woodland. To the south, a formal Persian-influenced garden runs from the orangery, framed by a pair of stone elephants and tall Italian cypress.
Bring a picnic blanket if the weather is kind. It is exactly the kind of place that rewards a slow afternoon.
